This unusual plane with its serrated blade set perpendicular to the grain of the wood. The blade is set at 90� to the sole of the plane. The blade called an iron was traditionally made of wrought iron, hence the name iron, with a thin steel of veneer forge welded to the face of the iron. When sharpened only the thin cutting edge is of steel with the rest of the sharpening done on soft iron. The steel back is then serrated with parallel grooves to produce a fine saw tooth pattern. When the bevel is sharpened the tip is serrated and cuts tightly grained wood such as curly maple or burls and not chip it out.

This type of plane blade has been used by musical instrument makers for centuries to plane the curly wood used in wooden instruments. The serrated or toothing blade cuts, scrapes and shreds the wood without chipping out the irregular grain.

Toothing planes are commonly used to prepare surfaces prior to gluing such as for veneering. Keying is also used on pieces like ivory and brass to roughen the surface prior to gluing. Intentional roughing of the surface prior to gluing increases the holding ability of the glue by up to 30%. This increased the surface area, hence a better glue joint.

I just picked up a couple of old toothing planes, I have owned several in the past and have made a number of them as well. It is actually one of the easier hand planes to make using traditional techniques. One of the old planes had its blade almost completely used up, only about an eighth of an inch left of the serrations and precious little steel. I will get a new replacement blade for it. The other did not have an iron so I put one in it and I use it on a regular basis. (I also have a cabinet scraper with a serrated blade for similar purposes).

What I am writing about now is using this fine plane for a purpose for which I am sure it was used in the past, although I have not run on any documentation. This information was extrapolated from experimental archaeology. I have seen some Russian planes that were finished on the outside with a toothing plane, the bodies were curly wood, the surfaces obviously planed with a toothing plane then scraped. The lines ran parallel to the sole of the plane. This got me thinking about other uses for the keying plane.

Now these are sometimes called truing planes as they true up really difficult grain. While planing the edge of some pine boards with nasty knots I was having trouble with other planes so I picked up the toothing plane and took care of those troublesome knots. Wow what a sweet tool. A little scraping and the toothing marks are gone.

Making a mitered door for a clock and after cutting the miter in the miter board, I shot the ends with a jack plane on a miter shooting board, but it was still a bit off, I had a belly in one piece. I laid the toothing plane on its side, worked over the miter and now it is keyed ready for gluing. I worked over all of the miters after shooting them with the keying plane on the miter shooting board. There must be other uses for this valuable hand tool.

>Logically (as in I've never performed experiments on achieving maximum gluing surface area) it seems that planing grooves in mating surfaces will only result in maximum surface contact if it so happens the grooves are mated with ridges. Since that condition is not likely to occur, I think the max surface results when both surfaces are flat. So I don't understand your 30% number.

As to planing tough grain with a toothing blade, I've long done this with the LN LA jack. Very effective.

I've been on the fence trying decide whether to purchase the LN toothing blade for my LN LA jack for some time. If I'm reading your post correctly, you would feel this is a worthwhile purchase for this purpose? I've also considered the Ray Iles toothing blade for the 60-1/2 block, as my needs are typically infrequent and generally not large in size. I've also noticed Lee Valley sells a toothing blade for their 112 equivalent.

Anyone else out there able to weigh in?

If this purpose is to work tough grain and knots, yes; although since buying the LN LA jack (remember, this was the first metal plane that worked for me) I've started using scrubs, which also work fine IIRC. I'll have to find a piece of real knotty board to compare scrub and LN jack.

Phelps MFG Oakland CA made a cast aluminium holder equiped with a modified toothing iron to be used as a lathe turning tool. in turning a toothing iron is useful for when the grain chainging from long to side to long and back to side can cause the tool to ride the grain and turn a cylinder that is not round, a toothing iron will true it up.

A 2" wide toothing iron can also be used when turning face plate work without the chisel catching and twisting due to the diferential speeds of work presented to the inside and outside edges of the chisel. the reason for this is that with the edge ground like a square nosed scraper the teeth created are actually in use more like twenty individual diamond point scrapers rather than a 2" wide single cutting edge.

The Phelps tool I mentioned is a rather crude looking cast aluminium handle with a thumb screw to lock the iron in place. the iron lacks a center slot and has the outside corners cliped of to create a wide rectanglular tang to fit in the holder. The one I used to use belonged to my boss when I was an apprintice and was painted red. The toothing iron I own is a buck bros plane iron held in a maple handle with a screw.

Modern wood glue creates a bond by soaking into the wood on both sides of the joint and then hardening which creates what I think is referred to as a chemical bond. The glue is the weakest part of this joint; it is a plastic like substance when hard that can easily be broken. So the tigher the joint is the less glue there will be in the joint the stronger the joint. Different types of glue adhere differently. Epoxy glue or hide glue do not really soak into the wood but rather adhere to the wood basically because they are sticky creating what is called a mechanical bond. For these glues that must adhere to the surface of the wood a rough surface improves the bond because there is more surface area to adhere to.

>Exactly the reason for purchasing the toothing blade. I'm not too attached to the price and that is why I'm considering the other options: block plane toothing blade, LV scrpaer toothing blade.

Fact is, when I encounter a problem during a project, it is at that time I consider a purchased solution. Usually it takes some time if I act on the solution or not! In the case of the toothing blade, I generally gotten around the need on a specific bad grain or knot situation, with a card scraper and holding my tongue just right!

>Well, the LN LA jack with toothing blade certainly is handy for stock prep. If you also have the Veritas scraping plane, you have quite the choice. Then the question becomes whether a high or low angle is the better way to approach problems in prepping, since the toothing blades are about the same price. I don't know the answer. Usually when confronted by such dilemma, I either choose both or nothing. Some help, huh?

I think there are several reasons why a toothing iron is not a common tool in todays world of turners. first may be that it is kind of unknown, like many patternamekers tools that have not really crossed over because of their very specialized nature. perhaps the biggest reason though is that patternmakers have never been highly regarded for their turning skills. Patternmakers can turn a vary precise part to exact tolerances, don't get me wrong that is a definate skill(I am a jounryman patternmaker after all.) what I mean is that the surface quallity of the finished turning is incedental to the turning because it will be primed, sanded, and painted. the most iportant aspect to a turned pattern is its diminsional acuracey and concentricity, hence paternmakers tend to have poor turning skils in the eyes of modern turners. for this reason todays turners have been more influenced by utilitarian turners and their tools and tecniques.

also most modern turners eschew carbon steel tools in favor of HSS and anything that is not HSS is not worth considering as possibly usefull. I think this is all a bit humorous in light of a relatively recent trend in using negative angle scrapers for finishing tough grain areas. even with HSS a negative angle scraper will not last any longer than carbon steel, infact carbon steel will last longer because it developes more of a burr which is what a negatve angle scraper is all about.

I suppose this would be a good opportunity for someone to make a HSS toothing blade and promote it for use on dificult grain and natural bark edges.
