I paid $60 for my 044, and while I got it to work well, the Veritas (even in pre-production guise) was a good cut above my Record.

Bought if off of e-bay in the spring for under 40 with shipping absolutely mint.It came with 3 irons the biggest is a 1/4" I have a 044 and 050. I don't have huge hands and think the tool is so small it's almost a toy. I really bought it for small work and plan on making a few really small irons for it and perhaps a small shaped iron or two. The tool in my mind would be very usefull to make minature furniture. With all 3 tools at my disposal I pick up the 050 because it's larger and more stable. For sizes larger than 1/4" or deep groves I still prefer a wooden plough plane. Yes I do think I own a few to many plough planes but they are like chisels very addictive.

This is a fine idea, but I haven't used the LV.

You can borrow my Rapier if you want to test drive a #43. I like it, a handy little plane. I take it to the cottage when I expect I might need to cut rebates or grooves because the plane fits easily in the tool box.

>I use mine a lot. These were made by Raiper (as said in a nother post) and Marples. There all about the same as far as quality goes. The 043 came with 3 cutters. Also it came with a depth stop a pair of rods and a blade clamp (lever cap so to speak). You will need all of the parts. It's easy to use blades from a 45 or similar plow plane in it if you find a bladeless one. It has a lower CG than most other plow planes I feel this is a benfit of this very usefull plane.

Be aware this little critter has no nickers.

The #043 is a fine little plane. From memory, it comes with 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" blades. The whole set up is rather rudimentary - it lacks a blade adjuster and the blade is just held in place with a lever cap - but because so it is easy enough to slip in (small) blades from other similar planes, such as a #45.

Mine is a Rapier version, and no different in quality to the Record planes I have. For features, the Record #044 is the better plane. It has a tote and a blade adjuster. It has a wider selection of blade widths. If I were to own just one, I would probably go for the #044.

Neither plane has a nicker - but, frankly, these are not needed as it is just as easy to knife in the lines.

Which ever you choose, check that the blades are there as well as the depth attachment (which looks like that on the #45).

I thoroughly recommend a small plow plane of some description. For small grooves and dadoes I use an Australian made clone of a #043 in preference to anything else. The linked photo above is not my plane, it comes from ALF's Cornish Workshop. Her website has a full run-down on these useful little tools.
