>A friend's son spent the summer learning to build log buildings, and asked if I could make him a log scribe. Fired up the forge and made him this. Very much a utilitarian piece, I didn't make any effort to make this "pretty", but he seemed happy with it. Should have spent a little time sweetening up the bends for the marker holder; I was trying some different configurations and didn't take the time to clean up once I found one that seemed like it was going to work.

Only serious problem is that I got the slide wrong, it should have had the thumbscrew and rivet ends reversed; as it is, the slide could stick out and interfere with the scribing. I'll have to reverse that.

The pen is just a for-instance -- anything can be stuck in there, they are oversize holes, the thumbscrew (a hex head bolt heated and smashed into being a thumbscrew) just pins the shaft in place.

Made from 3/8" hot rolled rod (mild steel).

>Fun to build too I bet.I'd love to learn to do that but I don't have time to do the stuff I already know. I have a nice set of antique dividers that were blacksmith made. The fine craftsmanship is obvious in the piece.A local blacksmith recently built a forge for the museum down the street.I watch demos whenever I get a chance.Who knows, maybe I'll get a chance to try it out myself.---Jack

>I'll have to try my hand at making one. (If i ever get time to fire up the forge) All-be-it on a smaller scale as I don't generally work with logs. Thanks for sharing.
