Some wood plane questions

>I went over today to look at the toolbox my son's considering selling off, and will be researching deBay for possible sale values - and maybe buying some myself. I've got some questions.
1. There were several what I think are called bead and quirk planes - name right? drawing of the bead it leaves at left, below - with quite a few duplicate sizes. These had fences built into the bodies. One such plane was odd - it had a central fence with identically sized beads on each side of the central fence - section of plane at right below. Why this design?
2. There were a decent number of hollows and rounds, with similar or identical radii but different widths. What benefit do the different widths offer?
Also several fillisters, some skewed, some not, most or all missing their fences. This is NOT a Seaton chest - evidence of hard use and bad repairs, particularly on the fillisters.
He does have a Sandusky plough and an unplated wood brace with a brass push-button chuck - those look like they might collect some pennies.
