>I can't believe it! I'm in Ottawa this week for business and skipped the thought I am near Lee Valley.
Any recommends on a spokeshave from them?
I now use a Kuntz that I tuned to death. Works ok but real issue is I don't have a good blade (using one it came with) and the throat is too "open".
I'm thinking as long as I am here........

>As Rob Lee says. You can't stop at one! The ones you want are 05P33.01 (flat) and 05P33.03 (round). There is also a nice 3 pack for a savings that includes 05P33.11 (concave). I can't comment on the concave, since I don't have one, but the other two are my go-to shaves. Well, except for my shop-made one with a Hock blade.

The three pack that Neal mentioned is indeed a good buy, I've been ogling these shaves for the longest time, some day I'll fall for them...

The flat and round an usually do a slightly better job than the low-angle, but the low-angle is very handy, versatile, and for some cuts on certain woods the low angle is just what you need to avoid digging in.

>Get a large and small spoke shave kit or 2 of each. Their a blast to make. Their a low angle design also. Easy to modify the blanks to make round bottomed shave too!
Besides them, you can't go wrong with the 3 shave set.

I use them mostly on dry wood for finishing work; the mouth is pretty tight and not set up for hogging off big shavings, but they're great for finish work. Not only is the mouth tight, but the thick iron means zero chatter. I have vintage metal shaves I use for rough green work -- sounds like you've already got that end covered with your Kunz.
Go for the whole set, you won't regret it; at the set price, it hardly makes sense to get just two. I use all three routinely. Some of my favorite tools.

>I do a lot of work with a spokeshaves and I have several vintage stanley and clifton shaves. I tend to use which ever one is sharp for most of the preliminary work, but when it comes to the final stages I always end up with one of the several small white metal shaves I have. These unmarked small shaves of mine are comperable to the set of three small bronze shaves sold by LV and I have even purchased a replacement blade from LV to use in one of my litle shaves.
when it comes down to the final passes where your taking a .003 thick shaving it doesn't mater how wide the blade is the shaving will be the same width on a rounded piece of work. the small compact size with the narrow handles gives me more control than any other shave I have used and that includes an old stanly I found that had the handles cut down. I am 6"2" and have a very dificult time finding gloves large enough to fit, so the small size tools are not always made for small hands.
Another thing I do with my shaves is that I have some that I have added a bevel on the front to convert them to a York pitch. these are very helpful for working curly figured wood just like a similarly modified bench plane. for this reason it is often nice to have duplicates of the same shave if it is one you find yourself useing frequently.

I wanted the kit of 3 but settled for one of the kits. I am sure I will enjoy it. My birthday is soon, why take away the joy of a wanted purchase from a family member?

Thought I'd sneek in here and say hello. Sorry to hijack the posts.
The operation was a total success, I am home now, 4 days after the operation and I feel the hip is pain free. I was totally happy with my hospital stay, my nurses and care givers were excellenet. I managed to find a way to give out a few "Thank You Pens" as well, lots of smiles and warm moments. On a tool note the audio I was experiencing in the operating room prior to the procedure sounded like a tool shop, I was wondering if there were any Veritas tools in the room...I was glad to have a general.
I'll post more later, but I am doing really well, Thank You for your kind thoughts. It's great to be back.

I even bought an unused antique blade with the tapered unthreaded tangs thinking I would either make a body to fit, or put it in an original body if one happened by that needed a blade.
