I have used the Klingspor rolls and have been pretty happy with them. Initially I got them for flattening planes on a 6 by 40 inch hunk of half inch glass, but I use them for blades as well. I have 220 on one side and 400 on the other. Now I pretty much just use the 220 side and for the other grits (up and down) lay pieces of sheet sandpaper on it. It doesn't let them move at all. For coarser grits for sole flattening, I just lay wallboard sanding screen on top of the 220.

I believe one can get a great system on everything but Japanese (cast steel, O1, etc...) with just 2 grits. When I did seminars, unless the sharpening was a large part of the point, I would just use 2 grits on a piece of 1" baltic birch, and that one set lasted years. It was something in the area of a 220, and a 600 or 800. I used PSA for the coarse, and a glued down SC for the top grit. I find the glued down sheet was better than the PSA. It lasted, and it bridged a huge gap in grits. It's worth figuring out what is the lowest grit you can get the hair popping with it is way nominally coarser than with water stones or oil stones, where 600 would be a chip removal stone, 600 paper can give you a miror finish on varnish etc. Body shops sell down to around 2000 because it's a better finish, but I am not sure that translates to steel. I'm a real sharpening snob and just got into the sandpaper for the seminars. I would sharpen tools before going so there shouldn't need to be any sharpening, but I need to be prepared. Since then I have used it a lot in the winter also.

I used to use glued down papers, but got tired of the mess, too. Now I just buy wet/dry paper and spritz some water down on my granite and the paper sticks there. A spritz on top of the paper and I am ready to go. Just peel the paper up when finished and a quick wipe with a paper towel and the cleanup is done.

I just buy the paper at my local auto parts store, except for the very fine stuff, which I get from Joel at TFWW.

As said I'll also use water to hold down paper. IMHO your wasting your time polising up plane soles to 2K grit. They will just get scrached up.
