How far can we take kerf ? . . .

>Finnished cleaning the goop out of some grooves that ran around some turned legs. Pondered the operation for a few days ( and asked here also ). Then tought of that fancy stair saw I made with WC hints. Worked peeeeerrrrrfect ! Now I'm wondering about wider grooves that are still to small for a riffler or gouge. If I cut up another blade for my stair saw ( I used cap screws instead of rivets so I could inter-change blades ) and set the teeth : #1 - far to the right, #2 - down the middle, #3 - far to the left, and so on. Maybe stagger the pattern over a four or five tooth string ? How wide a cutting patern ( groove ) do you suppose we could acheive before we end up with a frizzy mess ? Just pondering out loud .

Does any one have plans for one? Or a link to go and see plans for one?

>when I was asking about designs for a stair saw the Master Saw Maker Mike Wenzloff was lurking here and threw me a bone. It was an honor for him to share his insight ! This is the design he passed on. I don't have a scanner or such high tech equipment. Hopefully hes still around WC. A visit to his web site is well worth the effort !

One of the ways of cutting in the sides for a classical guitar is to glue the ends into a saw kerf at the neck. Side thickness varies, but it is in the 2 mm area (3/32"). There are those (in the traditional end of the craft) who cut this in one pass with a saw that looks a bit like a carcass saw. I don't have anything that will cut that thick a kerk, and anything near that thick that I happen to own is not a smooth cutting saw. My approach (all rights reserved) was simply to saw a kerf with whatever saw I was comfortable with, then find a series of shims and scrappers, and jam those into the kerf as a platform upon which a Lee Valley dozuki or any other one-sided set saw could be referenced. Then just cut a kerf with that saw. As each cut is made, a new stack of spacers, or series of spacers etc... is inserted in the kerf, the kerf grows with accuraccy until it reaches the exact size you want.

There are options to add shims without moving the spacer much, or to add only spacers to the initial kerf filler (I feel a magnet moment coming) so that the saw either jumps a lot more than a kerf (waste to be removed later, or a lot less than a kerf). You still preserve the option to do micro fits at whatever groove width, or to waste the material you skip, as required. You could also jig it to create an angled groove as typical of a whole other method of neck joinery.

Those little false edged saws are very clever little deals. I like the LV Ryoba, because it's good, of course, and the left and right edges come in handy when Jackassing about.

>never thought of shims. These are grooves going around a turned leg though. I guess you could remove the leg and spin them again but dont want to take 'em off. Just clean them out and, maybe, like, sharpen ( ? ) them up. I'm think'n that the most kerf ( width of cut/slot ) would be three times the width of the blade stock. Probably a bit less so the the cut of the teeth overlap.

Metalworkers figured it out already

>Metalworkers used to (maybe still do, if the CNC milling machine is unavailable) stack hacksaw blades up until they got the right width of kerf, for things like cutting screw slots in cap screw heads. Some older hacksaw frames have very long pins to facilitate this - I find it's hard to impossible on newer frames, as the pins are very short.

Hacksaws are set "wavy," with the set of the teeth forming kind of a flat sine curve and cut very smoothly in wood, though VERY slowly.

Haunt your local garage sales until you find a hacksaw frame with longer pins, and you may find you've got an uncle named Robert.

The blade does not have kerf, and the blades come in various thicknesses so any assortment can be stacked in there. LMII sells them but so does a local tool store, so they can't be that odd. They have a characteristic turned up horn at the end for the off hand.
