English Saw Dating

>Picked up a very old Spear & Jackson saw yesterday. Blade logo is stamped into the blade, not etched, but it has a different medallion than my other blade stamped Spears.

Anyone know of a resource that dates Spears saws by medallion type?

No help on dating. The S&J web site has a bit of their history and so does Wiktor's web site.

I suspect it's an early saw. Here's mine which has an identical medallion.

Yesterday I attended my first old tool show. I was lucky enough to buy 40 old saws from a guy who sold them to me right out of the back of his van before he took them indoors to sell to the regular members. We loaded them directly into the trunk of my car. Among the 40 saws were 9 Disston #12,s and two really nice #7,s. About half of the saws are Disstons. I'll be reconditioning them and selling them on eBay during the coming months.

I have a great interest in hand tools in general but am most involved with collecting and restoring old handsaws. I sell some on eBay and also do custom restoring and saw sharpening. The amount that I have learned here on WoodCentral is immeasurable. One of the things I've learned, I'm pretty much of a hack compared to so many people who frequent this site.

Most saws resemble others of the same period. Evolution, or stylistic change, wasn't fast.

There are notable differences between the S&J and a Civil war era #7 I have. Easy to spot side by side.

Yesterday was all about water heaters, not great old tools. BTW, I got out-sniped on that 112 you had up on ebay. Rats!!!

It's ending in an hour and a half. Take a look, I filed starter teeth on the top edge of the blade for about 3 inches. It's the best look'n saw on eBay at the moment.

Sorry you didn't make it to the show. So many good tools and so little money. I bought a really nice slightly used saw vise with 14" jaws. Very unusual.

The Atkins No.64 that ended a couple hours ago was won by a guy with the same name. Checked his feedbacks and he's been buying mostly Atkins saws.
