I have some lengths of 3/4 or 1 inch. cold-rolled round steel bar here I haven't used in 4 yrs.

I bought it then when I had the "crazy" idea to put together my own CNC router system, and these bars were to support the X-Y axis gantry system. I came to my senses a short while later :)

I don't need it anymore.

Tool steel is ground to dimension, that's how the sharp edges are made. Cold roll is formed with square edges but not ground. The reason the tool steel is so expensive is because grinding is a slow process and of course it is hardened and is a higher grade of steel. It can also be hardened as you probably already know.

Do you have a belt sander? If so you can sand two sides to get the sharp edges on cold roll. If the parts are short, it's fairly easy to do. Hot roll is out of the question for your application. Hot roll is horrible stuff to work with. But it has it's place.

>Denis if you only need small bit's try a machine shop. They usually have a bunch of small bit's around in their scrap bin. Steel's really shot up in price lately. Some of those replacement HSS blades that LV sells are a really good deal.
