It's been 26 + hours

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native, Presently Away

>since my last smoke! :~) Had to break down and buy some patches. Put one on yesterday a.m. at 8 a.m., and have beeen fine ever since. No strong urge to smoke, tho I had the feeling several times over the coarse of the day that something was missing. I haven't put a patch on yet this a.m., and am going to hold off for as long as possible before doing so. If I get any blinding urges to come here to Ellis' House and speak my mind I'll slap one on right quick and hope that it kicks in real quick, otherwise Wiley, best to be standing by with your finger on the Master Delete trigger. ;~)

Well, guess I'll go listen to Steppenwolf sing Magic Carpet Ride, than maybe go to the flea market. Getting kinda' hot tho, but just read a few chapters in the latest book I'm reading instead. We'll see. Better get, I feel, I feeeeeeeeeeeel, Oh Wiley get ready! ready! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! Who said China?! Who?! WHO?!

I'm completely convinced...

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>you'll make it just fine, ToddO. In our family, smoking killed my father's entire generation and the one before. They all starting having heart attacks in their early 40's and were dead by 50-55. My father had his first heart attack at age 47 and seemed to be following the pattern, our family was expecting to lose him. But as the youngest member of the family at that generation, he lived just long enough for Medicine to figure out that for some families, such as ours, smoking causes artery close-down and ultimately death.

So Dad quit smoking and was put on blood thinners for the remainder of his life.

I think I've told you I consider him the finest man I ever knew. We were honored and blessed to have him until he was 84.

Good luck, ToddO. And my congratulations to your family.

Best, Ted

>Feb 12 1979 I had my last casket nail while I was driving myself to the ER where they put into intensive care and I survived a heart attack. It is a extremely difficulf habit to break. I have known people who smoked after their second heart bypass! But it is possible to quit...do what ever it takes to get the monkey off of your back. Good luck, best wishes

keep up the "good work"

>We want to have you around a long time. I'll bet hand planing a table top is as good as a patch. Think how many tools you can buy with the savings.

Hang in there Todd...

>Its possible to quit. I used to substitute gum for smokes when I got that "missing" feeling, and on occasion I still get the missing feeling for gum rather than smokes - so it worked for me anyhow.

>Way to go Todd,

I quit smoking around a year ago after many tries (some which lasted several months...you have to continually watch out), but I found quitting MUCH easier with patches. They're expensive, but I just couldn't last more than a few weeks without them. One piece of advice: don't skip the steps, take the time to gradually lower the doses of nicotine in the patches and you'll have less of a chance at relapse.

Good luck!

>Todd,

You're really doing well. Use the patches. It's a tough go to quit. We're all pulling for you. Your lungs will thank you.

>Hi Todd,

I never had to quit smoking because I never developed the addiction. However I am a recovering alcoholic. Have not touched a drop in over 32 years. The drinking wasn't only a health problem but also hard on my family and dangerous as well, not to mention the expense. Just like quiting smoking or anyother detrimental addiction, the plus factors becomes so rewarding that in time they way out number all the negative factors relating directly and indirectly to the addiction that you will overcome and defeat. As you know, the most difficult aspect of the process is the fact that what we are defeating is all around us all the time, everyday of our lives. All of those reminders that create the strong urges are constantly testing our will. It's your desire to quit and your will and determination that will win the battle. The operative word is "YOUR". Others can and will encourage you, but in the end it will be you who can claim all the credit and satisfaction for accomplishing something that we all know is very difficult. I won't wish you good luck, rather I'll wish you success.

>THANKS ALL!! Just got back from the flea market and am off to take a quick shower than take a nap just to while away a few hours in this hot afternoon. Nothing to speak of in the way of goodies, but I do have a question. The double sided sharpening stones that seem to be commonly found amongst the stuff of watch repair folks, are they of any use on WW'ing tools? A guy had two of them for $5 each, I offered $3 each, and as far as I know he still has them.

So far no patch on yet, I'm doing fairly well, tho spells of lightheadness are starting to happen. At any rate, I'm using the 21 mg patch by Equate because it was half the price of the NicoDerm 21 mg. $43 for the NicoDerm, $19 for the Equate.

>Todd, I quit ten years ago and barely even dream about them anymore. Also quitting put a lot more tool money in my pocket.
