Gloat and Stanley Question

>Was traveling on business this week and stopped into an antique store between the towns of Tightwad, Missouri, and Peculiar, Missouri (actual names). Picked up a prelateral Stanley #34 (their largest transitional plane) for $18. Of course the tote was broken, but otherwise a pretty decent plane. Had big note "AS IS" on the tag referring to the tote, which I guess was good because it was right next to a no name #4 size plane for which they wanted $50.
Anyway, I noticed that there was a dot on the pebbled lever cap like the Target store logo and I thought it was something really unusual that I had never seen before. So when I got home I looked at my other transitionals and most of them (but not all) had this same dot, althought it gets smaller as the planes get newer. So much for being observant.
Does anyone know what this is for? I don't think it is decorative because in many of my other planes it is poorly finished. Does it have to do with the casting process?
