OT - counters are in!

>The counters on the long run of cabinets were installed yesterday - yippee! Next comes flooring and finishing and installing the butcher block on the other side, then appliances (with finishing up the lighting circuits in the meantime, among other little things) - then we can move back in to the kitchen!!!

>Why no, those are decorative elements, not shims. Yep. Haven't removed them yet. In spots, they're thick enough that a razor knife isn't quite enough - time for a little backsaw - but I'm trying to keep ahead of (a) the appliance delivery next Tuesday and (b) our son's flooring installation.

Yes, we like the beadboard effect. We were after a slightly country, slightly period kitchen, since the house was built in 1890 or so, in what was, then, an agricultural county.

>We don't have a garage, and I'm not quite up to building cabinets in the driveway - particularly this time of year, when the cedar tree spits sap all the time.
We went with mid-grade cabinets through a local home improvement place, rather than the big box store basic cabinets. There's still a lot of termite barf (MDF flavor) and thin plywood, but they use VERY nice drawer glides, and they were flexible (at a cost) - for instance, one lower cabinet is just 18" deep, rather than the standard 24".
Still, putting in a kitchen is a series of design decisions, followed by a series of compromises when stuff arrives not quite as expected.
