I found the naval ship tours fascinating. The bunk between the torpedoes on the sub particularly struck me.

The Pink Hotel on Meeting Street has a person who organizes an architectural walking tour from the lobby. One of the better tours INHO.

Charleston has a great museum in the old downtown area; including a confederate sub that was raised from the bay (and restored). Plenty of good eating places (my favorite is Locklear's in Mt. Pleasant).

Savannah is closer ( about 45 miles instead of 100) and has a fully restored riverfront area. There are two museums along the river front. The River House has the best low country food (be sure to try the sesame coated scollop's).

Charleston is -- hands down -- my favorite city. I'm headed there myself in August (as always). There is surprisingly little to do there that relates to woodworking, however. The King Street shops are filled mostly with English and French antiques (interesting, but not Thomas Elfe!).

I've always suspected that the best stuff is still in use in the houses that are South of Broad (SOB).

The plantation museums up the Ashley River have some nice pieces. The history museum sometimes shows some of the pieces of amazing Souther furniture (last year they had a very cool sugar chest on display for the lowcountry foodways show).

The food and architecture is the main attraction. My favorite restaurants on the peninsula:

But as Mr. Schwarz points out, there are many old homes open to the public on the tours, and they offer a vast array of woodworking styles to view, from Middle Ages European to Asian, and of course, all periods of the American furniture and building styles. You'll have loads of fun!
