Holtzapfel in the wild?
Stephen Kirk in Quakertown PA
>I found this lovely bench at the Museum of American Frontier Culture in Staunton, VA. It sure looks like the designs of a Holtzapfel (hope I spelled that right) workbench that I've seen Chris Schwarz put out in Pop Woodworking and on his blog. I'd guess the user was a lefty by the position of the leg vise. In the tool tray were hollow square shafts that I believe fit in the dog holes. I haven't seen anything like that before. There was a well used bench hook, and by the nice old hunk of wax I'd guess somebody did a lot of sawing and planing. Oddly enough, I saw this in the American barn, not in the German barn where I would have expected it.
There are two nice treddle lathes that I'll also post later, if people are interested.
