>So, Yesterday I took the day off of work and SWMBO and I went to the Genesse Country Village in Mumsford, NY. I'd never been there before, but it's really neat. It's dated in the early to mid 1800's, with all sorts of trades and crafts, including coopering (got to see a demo), carriage repair, pottery, gunsmithing, and cabinetmaking. Unfortunately the cabinetmaker wasn't there, but on his bench was a nice chair he was crafting. This place is what I imagine Colonial Williamsburg to be(only I'm sure williamsburg is bigger). The thing that struck me was that the cabinetmaker in this village, shared a building with the gunsmith and had a very little room compared to what we think we need today. It really makes you wonder if we haven't lost something as a culture. An amount of fortitude and creativeness to rise to the everyday challenge of survival. It really made me take a look at the things I take for granted everyday, and the excuses I've made on why I can't get things done. (ie. "I can't build cabinets until I get a new dado set for my tablesaw.") I've got some pics I'll try to post later of the cabinet and carriage repair shops. Thanks for letting me ramble.
