Heard on the Aust news that the South Isle ski season can't start because Otago and Caterbury are blanketed in ice and snow and no one can get to the slopes.

All the cold weather was further south. My parents live in Wanaka and took this photo of their front gate 2 hours after the snow started. After a couple of days they had about 12 inches covering the ground. Here in Wellington, where I live, I only see the thermometer drop below freezing one or two nights a year and never see snow. Can't say I miss it!

>My parents live there but I moved away from Otago more than 20 years ago and now live in Wellington, the capital city, where temperatures range from 5-25C (roughly 40-80F for those who don't do metric measures). Expensive heating or aircon systems aren't needed, just a tolerance for politicians, strong wind and earthquakes.
