You are right; it seems some times an empty box is worth more than the item that came in it. If there were any way possible to save the boxes I would; in the attic, in a basement, anywhere out of the way and the temptation to throw them out. We may not realize the additional price but our children may.

I don't have such "small stash". Although I do have a few Veritas boxes shashed in the wine cellar (which could use more bottles in it), and come to think of it, I might have one or two LN boxes in there ;-)

I do keep the boxes, because they make a better impression if and when I resell a tool.

Now I'm sure you're keeping Konrad's boxes :-)

Did you buy these tools to use or are you a collector who is planning to sell his collection at a later time? I own three LN tools: a block plane, a spoke shave, and a shoulder plane. I threw out the boxes from the block plane and the spokeshave since I use them fairly often and it would be a pain to take them out of a box each time I used them. I seldom use the shoulder plane and the box it came in isn't too large. The box and the protective anti-rust paper keep it from getting tarnished or rusty and don't take up much room.

Perhaps you can sell just the boxes on EBAY, it has been done before.

I sold a LN tool here about a year ago or so, I thought I had the box, I was mistaken. I called LN and they mailed me an empty box on their nickel....I was dumb struck.

Konrad's are hand delievered..

I'll probably never profit from selling off the tools with the box, but than again, one never knows what the future holds. Who knows I may live to be so old that I can no longer use the tools and therefore might as well sell them off, but I hope that dosen't happen.

I fiqure that with todays current trend of what a tool brings without the box vs. with the box, that keeping the box is a good investment of space. Hopefully my daughter will keep them, and pass them along to her children, but if not I feel she'll get more for them with the boxes, the orginal wrapping paper, the orginal receipts, and the little LN tool pamplets.

I find SWMBO is always happy to have a small yet heavy duty box to store jewellery findings and she takes much better care of her things than I do so it is always in perfect shape when I need it again! And it's stored out of the workshop usually surrounded by fabric and off season clothes :-)

And not used. Which isn't to say it won't pay you to keep them.

Most grand children would probably thank one for buying Berkshire shares, and not leaving them with an enourmous estate of iron to squirm out from under.

I have found a few planes still in thier tattered boxes that look like they saw moderate use but unusual, I think most users if they were going to use the plane much deep sixed the box....Combination planes might be an exception here. A couple of times I have found boxes that the guy used to store screws or hardware in...

Once bought a mint no. 65 that was so bright you had to wear sunglasses to look at it.Man you could tell it had to have just came out of a box. Figured what the hey and asked the seller if it had a box somwhere.Amazed He asked how I knew that? ....then told me he had sold some marbles that morning and put them in the box for the person to carry home since he didn't have any bags !.......Todd
