I'm not sure if this is a waste of time or not. I was recently cleaning out my hand tool cabinet and found some Stanley # 9 1/2 Adjustable Mouth block block planes I had purchased at yard/garage sales and flea markets over the last couple years. Both have some type of damage. My plan was to find more at yard sales and eventually have enough parts could make one good plane.

Having read up on this block plane on Patrick's Blood & Gore, I know this is one very common plane. And damage to the body (in the area around the "mouth") is very common.

But I have (2) of these lonely little guys. I think I might have spent all of $10 for both. I was wondering if anyone knew of an (economical) source for Stanley #9 1/2 block plane bodies. I have (2) of these, both with damage to the mouth area. This damage is too big to fix by simply filing the mouth.

I've checked on Ebay and have noticed that there are many "Stanley" 9 1/2 block planes out there for sale. Most have a starting price of around $10 (but somehow shipping is ALWAYS and additional $10). All I need is the body. And to be honest, I'm very leery of buying any hand plane off of Ebay. I'd rather have a source someone I know has recommended

I guess I'm trying to decide whether to fix them, or get rid of them.

>so you can't get a new one - unless you somehow stumble over someone with original unsold stock, an unlikely event. So it's the used market for you.

Not so sure it's worth it - better you should see the parts you've got as useful parts for planes you find than try to slip a new body under the parts.

But I don't want a new body. A used one is what I had in mind. I should have been a bit clearer on that. I'm looking for a source of USED plane parts. There had got to be an reliable internet source out there. Right?

>I have purchased from Pete, and he is very honest and helpful. Notice I didn't say inexpensive. He knows what his parts are worth. You might also try our own Todd Hughes. He parts out planes on ebay from time to time - maybe he has a spare body laying around.

>One thing to note...in my experance you can not take the front adjustable mouth pieces off one plane and fit it on another one as the ones i have tried this with seemed to be machined while on the body and were all just a bit different. If you find a body make sure it has the mouth piece still and don't count on using one of yours

...Personaly I would sell the parts that you have [hard to find a better place to do that then Ebay !] and take $5 out of what you get and buy a nice complete 9 1/2 that doesn't need to be fixed and is all original instead of trying to hob together one out of parts.....Todd
