Drilling M2

>Seems that only carbide twist drill bits will work with that alloy... Went out to price a 1/4" bit and that came out to close to $40. Lots of money for a one-time job...

Anyone with alternative solutions? My sharpening place isn't equipped to drill M2 (they will grind it, though), and the place where I left my Stanley #8 to get the sole straightened out didn't know about M2 (they have a good reputation, it's just that alloy steels is not part of their business).

I'm all ears...

>Black and Decker sell carbide bits for glass and tile that work on hardened A&O1. Haven't tried them on M2. They are hardware store or Borg items. Bad Dog Tools also sells simular bits for hardened steel. Use the highest speed you can and a coolant. They grind the hole rather than cutting.

Do you really need a 1/4" wide carbide bit? What if you started with 3/64" or 1/32" one (likely to be much cheaper and less work) and then just widened the hole with HSS bits? That's what I would first try.
