>Maybe I'm missing something, but how do you know that it came from the U.S.S. Lexington? You mention provenance, but I'm not seeing any specific proof...just a colorful story. For starters, the battle of the Coral Sea was in May, 1942, so his assertion that the original cosmoline is from 1943 doesn't add up....as the Lexington had been sunk by then. Of couse, I guess he could be referring to a later battle "in" the Coral Sea by the next U.S.S. Lexington, rather than "the" battle of the Coral Sea.

Regardless, this seems a bit dubious to me.

While this seller is being ...uhmm...rather optimistic [by about $1,000 at least !] in his pricing if he was a real astute seller he would have broken it up for parts....with stories of the parts coming from the Lexington, the Arizona, the West Virgina ship planes and maybe even some parts from the really rare Stanleys used on the WWII Submarines !

>Quite a yarn, or perhaps I should say Sea Story. 4 years ago I bought a NIB #45 from Phil Whitby (NH dealer) for $250 complete with original brown wrapping paper, screwdriver, booket, and the little brown envelope with the spare nickers still stapled shut with the mini staple. The unmarred rosewood was really pretty too.
