I have a saw bench

Stephen Kirk in Quakertown PA

>I'd been wanting a bench for hand sawing for a while, and after seeing Chris's plan in Wooodworking magazine, I decided to make that one. This was my first attempt at making through wedged tenons, and they came out alright. Not perfect, but certainly passable for the bench. I used the chisel method to split the tenon and it worked well. Everything is 5/4 pine (actually, 1 1/8" the way the home store sells it). The top is held to the legs with Miller dowels. I'll probably add the shelf later. Oh, those side pieces are just plywood to add rigidity, though.

I already used it, and the low height and the ability to kneel on it is nice. It's a comfortable way to saw. Once I get my hold down from Lee Valley, I'll add a hole for it. The bench is a good height to sit on for hand mortising work too.

Now, I just have to decide if or how I should finish it.

Oh, some electrons were killed during this construction, but I did use a bunch of hand tools as well.

>Great job, Steve.

I made a pair of these when I first saw them in the magazine. I wish I had had them years ago. They have come in so handy so many times; a great design; and virtually in-destructible.

P.S.

Put the shelves on, they are a great place to put more "stuff".

My advise as to a finish -- a few rip saw kerfs in the notch. Really, no need for any finish. I think most would do more harm than good.

>My LV hold down is on the way. Once it's here, I'll know where to put the hole. I figured that would be a good idea.
