I want a tool that does this....

>I am looking for a small hand held tool for flattening the ground around carved elements. I can't find a tool that is shaped the way I want. Ideally this tool would have a 1/4 inch serrated surface like a file but it would be at the end of a curved or bent handle.

I have a variety of smile rifling files but the bent angles are acute enough. If anyone knows who makes or sells something like this I'd be happy to know more. Thanks.

(I am posting this on the Main Message and Carving Boards also)

>Alan, Isn't this usually done with cutting tools? One reason is to get a better surface than can be gotten with a float/abrasive tool as you illustrate. There are special carving tools with sharp bends to allow access to the sunken field of carvings.

If you want this type of abrasive tool, it should be relatively easy to make. There have been discussions on the board about making floats for plane making which seems about what you are suggesting. You might search for those threads and check the articles as well.

The carving section of this site will have some answers too.

Good luck, and post a picture of your tool and your final project!
