Unkown treasure or a fluke?

>Over the years I've picked up an assortment of stray gouges when opportunity presents itself. Recently I decided that I needed to prune down to those I would actually use and sell the rest. I put this 1" Buck gouge up on you know where. I started it at $0.99 hoping I might get a ten spot out of it (I paid $5 for it). To my surprise, it went for over $38, and this wasn't two people duking it out, it was two high bids placed when the price was at $5. The eventual winner placed a high bid well before closing, then someone tried to snipe at $37 and didn't beat the earlier bid (makes me wonder how high that was).
The maker's mark is Buck Bros Cast Steel with the deer head in the middle. It didn't draw this money based on looks -- is there something special about this gouge that I was unaware of, or just one of those things that happens in auctions sometimes?
