and how I fixed the lateral adjuster lever

>The lateral adjuster lever was designed as a two-piece lever - the lever part, which twists at the outer end to form a handle; and the wheel that operates on the plane iron in the iron's slot. The wheel had rolled away somewhere, leaving the lever free to move uselessly on the frog.
Step 1 was to remove the lever from the frog, which I accomplished by filing the back side of the rivet down to the frog and then drilling and driving it out of the frog and lever.
I found a washer with roughly the right thickness and outer diameter. Its hole was a bit larger than the hole in the lever, but the use of a countersunk brass rivet solved that, as the countersink centered the hole quite nicely. After I set and flattened the rivet, I filed down the head a bit so it would stay in the thickness of the iron (and not interfere with the cap iron), and the back side so it wouldn't grate on the frog body. I chucked another brass rivet in an electric drill chuck, and reduced the head size by running it against a file (similar approach to Derek Cohen's in his recent monograph on making knurled cap screws), then riveted the lever back on the frog.
Works a treat; we'll see over time whether the hollow brass rivets are strong enough for the application.
By the way, if anyone recognizes the frog pattern as belonging to a particular maker, I'd be interested, just to see what I've assembled here.
