>I think I remember reading that the printed side of the stone is the preferred sharpening surface. By gosh, it does seem to work better, at least with the 1000 grit stone. Am I a victim of my supposition, or is it so? If so, why? Thanks.
Both sides are the same

>On Shapton professional stones the side with the printing is identical to the other side as far as I can tell. Once the printing is gone I lose track of which side is which.
I like flattening both sides and reserving one for the back of the chisel. That way I know I'm not starting to lose the flatness of the back by honing it on a dished stone.
