>I cleaned up the etch on the saw a bit. The very top line appears to say "EXTRA". Below that is "DAVENPORT IOWA". Then "H. HABBECK" and below "SPRING STEEL" and "WARRENTED". Pitch is stamped "7" at the heel.
I thought the broken handle was a replacement, but it looks like it might be the original rosewood, with homemade bolts and steel stiffener added.
Any more clues? If nothing else it's a nice straight user.

Habbeck was probably a hardware store who sold it and had Disston etch it for them. Handle is described as "Walnut finished" and i doubt that it is rosewood.The steel plate is original and not an add on.
.... These were pretty cheap saws costing almost half what a D7 cost which were the lowest priced of Disston branded saws I believe.
....I see a good many of these cheap type saws. Personaly I wouldn't put much effert or thought into one esp. one this rough as much better saws are easly found......Todd

>Thanks, Todd. I didn't figure this was the holy grail, but it was a name I'd never heard before. It's straight and not pitted, so it will go into the donor pile to receive a handle and then onto the user rack.

Did Disston also make cheap combination saws (like a Disston No. 29, only cheaper) for hardware stores? I've found of couple with etches I haven't heard of and wondered they we're cheap Disstons or made by some small sawmaker.
