Nicely done.

My only reservation is that I prefer wood for wood. While the brass is fine for the steel blade, this will damage the plane body. I do more hammering on the rear of the plane body than on the blade. Consider that setting the blade involves very little hammer action (essentially one places the blade in the plane on a hard surface and taps in the wedge).

As a result I use a wooden mallet (styled somewhat after the one made by HNT Gordon).

An alternative is to look at the mallet made by Dave Anderson (Chester Toolworks). He does one that is wood on one side and brass on the other.

>Thanks. I hollowed out the end of the handle so the shape matched the curve of the brass, then I cut a slot and put in a piece of cherry for a wedge. I don't have the angle quite right on the wedge yet as the head is still a little bit loose. It will take some more fiddling to get it just right.

Tim, remember that you do less damage when you spread the force, more damage when you focus it in a small area - think stilletto heels.
