Kennedy Machinists Tool Chest

>I just snagged a Kennedy tool chest from the bay. It is in pretty good shape, but needs a little work before I store my precious measuring tools in it. It smells pretty bad, but I think mineral spirits and Florida sunshine will help out there. The felt in the drawers seem to be the worst part of the smell. Does anyone know where I can get replacement felt?

>I don't know if it is the exact same felt but try a fabric store many colors to choose from. if you don't like that try a billard supply house. lots of colors there also.

Their machinist's chests (and machinist's chests in general) are truly cool storage devices. I've got a wide old Crafstman in which my uncle's machinist's tools and other similar tools live, and a smaller Kennedy in storage, waiting for me to get around to adding a shelf next to the bench, so I can fill it with the day-to-day woodworking layout tools.
You probably already know that a little grease or wax on the drawer slides is a good idea.

>I prefer the PSA backed felt. it is much easier to work with because the back side of the paper is white and shows a pencil line, also the paper keeps it from going all wonky when you are cutting it. I get mine from Sutherland felt co they have a minimum order but 5 lineal yards of 60" wide black 1mm thick PSA backed felt ended up costing $65.53 including shipping. Buying individual sheets from one of the woodworking catalogs would have cost me $135 for the quantity I needed because of the odd size of my drawers. well not my drawers, but the ones in the jewelry cases I'm making.
