>I took a beginning blacksmithing course a while back and then the so-called intermediate course (a "course" in this case is on the order of 16 hours or so of live work). Following that the smith/instructor asked if I'd like to continue on with him under what he calls his "1 for 1" apprenticeship, which basically means for every hour you work on your own stuff in his shop, you work an hour on his stuff (the initial courses cost money -- this costs labor). He does a lot of large ornamental stuff that requires help (like twisting a 10 foot piece of 1.5" round stock!). He does all his work by muscle power, no power hammers.
I got into this thinking about making some woodworking tools. Pictured below is an 80% finished adze. This will eventually be a small hollowing adze with a curved blade; at this point the blade is still flat. I annealed it last session so I could do the finer grinding and shaping with a minimum of hardness in it.
It's fraught with mistakes, one of which is that some of the initial shaping of the blade started too close to the future location of the eye, so there's less meat and depth between the eye and the blade than I intended. Also, somehow I managed to get the eye a little out of alignment with the blade. Next session I'll heat it up again, straighten the eye/blade alignment (hopefully), put the curve in the blade in both directions, then harden and temper it. Then I just need a handle and some sharpening. Hopefully it will cut wood!
Blacksmithing and toolmaking are interesting things, I'd encourage anyone with even a mild interest to give it a try. My work is still pretty crude, but it still gives you that rush of accomplishment that your first woodworking projects did, even though they are pieces that you probably later didn't care for because of the poor execution compared to the skills you developed later.
One of the things I find to be very interesting is the contrast in how you work metal compared to wood. Woodworking is in essence a process of removal, wherein you take an oversize blank and cut away everything you don't want to leave the desired shape. In forging metal, you start with roughly the same mass of material that you will end up with, but (generally) in compact shape. You then push it around to get it into the shape you want it, which might be wildly different in multiple dimensions from the starting point.
