rehabbing a woody -- filling checks with epoxy

>Hi all-
I'm trying to bring an old beech coffin smoother back to life. So far it is ready to receive a new sole.
However, the body has a couple of checks that are bugging me, as they are somewhat close to the bed. My first thought is to fill the checks with epoxy.
Has anyone been down this road before? As always, your help would be greatly appreciated.

>Sometimes you don't have a better choice. I find that if you put a thick bead over the crack, then place the plane in a plastic shopping bag, then stick the nozzle of a vacuum into the bag and pull a vacuum on the plane, it will suck the epoxy down deep into the crack. You should wipe the excess epoxy off the surface of the plane before it begins to set. Sometimes you will need to do it more than once. -wayne

>Super-glue works well for small checks. You can put a drop of water on top of the super glue to help it set faster.
