I had to take a look after seeing the advertisement in FWW. The photos looked like something that came out of NASA. I've always loved looking at the craftsmanship of their tools. Not that I'm about to drop close to $600 for a shoulder plane. If and when I get one, I'm more partial to the LV Large Shoulder plane.

You and I are of the same mind on that! I know that it's a high quality plane. But I'd be scared to use it! And for that much money, it better come with a small elf or gnome that sharpens it when I'm not in the shop. :>) (Hell, if he wants I have a WHOLE rack of tools he can sharpen!)
And I MUCH prefer the Lee Valley Large and/or Medium Shoulder planes. At a past WW'ing show, I happened by the LV booth and I tried one out. It just flew into my hands and begged to be used (I HATE when that happens!) :>)

Design inspiration?

>Having seen a more complete picture of this plane in the new Popular Woodworking (p. 17, top right, if you subscribe), I am trying to figure out whether the designer was frightened by pictures of Viking warships as a child or has found a previously unknown trove of design drawings from Middle Earth (probably from Gimli's shop).
There are some interesting features, including the thumbscrew-tightened adjustable shoe for mouth opening. But it's still way too much money for me. If I had that kind of money, I could get the Lee Valley large, medium, AND bullnose shoulder planes.
