Hi Everyone,

Here are some before/after photos of my father in law's old No5 Stanley. It had been sitting down in a damp basement for several years and was coated with surface rust. After seeing the condition it was in, I volunteered to clean it up.

I used a soft wire wheel to remove as much of the surface rust as I could. After that I spent a couple days working on flattening the sole and the sides. After that I worked on the plane iron and chip breaker.

Since you've seen it a million times before, I won't bore you with the rest of the restoration details. Suffice to say, I got the iron nice and sharp, the sole as flat as possible, and the sides reasonably flat (he's NEVER going to shoot miters with this!). After I re-assembled it, I was very pleased with the improved performance.

I presented this #5 and a restored Stanley block plane (no pictures of that one!) back to my FIL last week. He was suitably impressed.

The next one I work on is going to be a real doozey! I got this #6 (of unknow manufacturer) a couple years ago and finally have gotten around to restoring it. With the amount of caked on crud this baby has, I think I may end up soaking it in a solution of simple green!

As for the other one, I don't think it's a #6, but either a #7 or even #8. The (Stanley) #6 is 18" long, and I think you'll find that most other manufactures followed suit within a 1/4". The #7 is 22" long, and the #8 24". Also, the chipbreaker may not be orginal to that plane either, looks like it came off of a Transitional.

I know that you are primarily a Turner--not that there's anything wrong with that--;~) and therefore may not be familiar with Patrick Leachs' site, so I'll put in the link to it. It's a fantastic site for gleaning knowlwdge of planes in general.

Pay no mind to his bad-mouthing of the #6, I for one think it's a great plane.

I was also going to sugest that he look at the blade for a manufacturer but sinse we know it is a frankin plane The blade maker may or may not be any help. Looks like it will make a good user though. Tuner up Dom and better get buisy on a drawing why you have it out.

Got a shot of the lateral? There's something about the shape of the knob and the rise in the toe of the tote that's familiar..but just can't place it...does appear to be longer than a #6 though..

I have been woodworking for about 25 years now, and would consider myself an enthusiastic amateur. My claim to fame (or infamy) has always been fixing stuff. I spent time in the Air Force in the 60's then went to work as an electronic technician for civil service. I finally got my EE, and being fed up with the civil service nonsense, took a job with Ford Motor Company until I went with the split to Visteon last year. I got interested in music and started playing in a bluegrass band. I wanted a new guitar, and that kind of led me into woodworking. I bought some books, a few tools, and built a guitar. Luckily, I didn't know any better than to try that as a first ever project. I still play it when I get a chance, so it must not be too bad if it can live for over 20 years. After a stint in Mexico for my job, I moved into a new house and built a small shop. Since then I have been collecting tools and skills, probably more of the former than the latter ;-). Finding this site has done more for my skills and enjoyment than anything else. I have learned a lot and really enjoy the friendships that I have made here. I have been married to LOML (Lori) for 32 years now and have 6 kids. When they are all gone, I want to get a 1 bedroom house (so there is not room for them to move back in) and at least a 6 car heated/air conditioned garage for a shop. (Dream on...)

>The no. 5 cleaned up nice. You might want to scrape the know and tote down and refinish them, although it's not realy nessary. The 7 looks like it will clean up good too.

Hmmm, someone has been bit the plane bug eh.

Thanks for the compliments. I was thinking about scraping the knob and tote down but decided against it. It's my FIL's plane and I had it in my shop for over a month. I needed to get it back to him.
