I cut all joints by hand.Dovetails on the case,Lap-miters on the lower door.The beading was mostly created with a 66 and/or homemade scratch stocks.The lower molding I roughed in with power but finished with rasp,plane and scraper.I cut the ogee profile into a piece of saw blade and used it to finish the shape and make it consistent.Unfortunately,I know of no practical way to create the round door by hand.Rounding that out was a nerve racking experience using a screaming finger eater(that loves to tear out) and I would welcome a practical alternative.Adding to the difficulty,I decided to make that piece with some figured walnut I had around.---Jack

You did a great job. I especially admire your half-lap miters on the doors. I find miters challenging with hand tools, particularly when you need to do four perfect ones for a door. Why did you do miters instead of mortise and tenon? Was the original clock done that way?

>I had a job a few years ago where a man brought a clock frame of qs white oak that was missing three of eight segments. I spliced pieces in and then carved to match the profile. If I had to make the whole door, I might have still carved, but I think most people would mount the glued up segments on a disk and turn the profile on a faceplate.

Also sounds like you got some good hands experiance at making scrapers and other tools, as well as honing your miter cutting nerves. ;~)

The clock face, even tho not your work sure adds alot to this piece, which is very important to the overall look in my book.

What's the little hand for? Seconds?

Sounds like you might of found something that you really enjoyed building. Soon you'll be building full blown Grandfather/Grandmother clocks. Isn't there also a Grandchild sized clock?
