Well, the bullnose isn't really meant for tenons I suspect--at least I never could use one. Yep, a longer nose would make it work and I do like the size of my Preston. Feels good in the hand. But...for tenon cheeks I don't even like using wide shoulder planes, either.
The bullnose does come out occassionaly for stopped rebates. For cleaning them up after popping out a piece with a chisel for the nose to land, and then removing the nose, they do work nice if one can control them.
When I have used a plane, I found the rabbet block of LN's nice as it is wider than most large shoulder planes and it is very ergonomic in use.
