Union Smoother
Tom MacGregor
>I just finished a clean & tune on a plane I got for $15.00 at a garage sale last fall. The seller was 94 years old and had gotten it from his uncle. Neither one had used it more than once or twice. Its a pre-Stanley Union smoother with 100% japan and a few unusual features. The knob and tote, which I believe are quarter sawn beech, are a beautiful honey brown color that I havent seen before. Its a factory second, stamped DAMAGED on the left cheek due to a flea-bite void in the casting at the back of the mouth. The amazing feature is the Union Mfg. Co. parallel iron that measures a full 7/32 thick. Thats a hair thicker that the Hocks Ive purchased for some of my Stanleys. I guess I wont need to upgrade this one!
