So now I look at this plane and kind of wonder why someone would waste their time making something that looks that bad and probably does not work well at all.

It appears someone stripped the finish off this plane. The body looks to be pretty solid but it will need a patch to close up the mouth. The wedge seems to be split down the middle and glued back together with dowels to help. The blade and cap iron look to be heavily pitted. I would pass on this one for that price and only would pay $5.00 if I thought the body was interesting (if it were a higher pitch or 18th century). If you don't see many wooden planes I would buy one from a reliable mail order or internet tool dealer. If you asked I'm sure you would get some good recomendations here.
