He did not like the forged finish and smoothed and removed the black oxide finish from the top surface of the blades, also blended the shaft where it meets the hollow tapered tube. He showed me these details when I visited some years ago.

Interesting that a man who had come through the traditional apprentice and union training took so wholeheartedly to Japanese tools, relatively late in life.

He also built incredible planes and other tools and had a fantastic collection of old Stanleys.
