Busted a Japanese DT chisel

>Chopping the waste on the pin board doing half-blind DT, Whacking away quite hard at them with a mallet (about as hard as driving 20d nails). Switching between the DT and skew chisels (that I made out of old BE chisels), I went to pick up the DT chisel at some point and it looked as there was a stray hair on the chisel's back. Went to wipe it off and it wasn't going away. What the... Then I realized that I had broken a chunk big enough that the fracture runs into the hollow. The mild steel layer holds the chunk in place, but basically the chisel is ruined...
Great, just wasted $50 or so :-(
