>Does anyone know how the threaded spool piece that the screw rides in is fitted to the front of the vise? I'm guessing that the flange is recessed, but have no instructions and can't find anything on the web. The vise's front is only 2-1/4" thick and the spool piece is about 2-1/8" from face of flange to end. If I countersink the flange, the hole would be about 1/8" from the front. I almost feel more comfortable with the flange surface mounted. I would lose about 3/8" jaw capacity but not a big deal.

By the way, mostly built with hand tools.

I believe the flange is usually recessed. That's what I did on my vice, but my vice-arm was 3-1/4" thick so I was not approaching any thickness limitations. (See sketch of what I did below).

Other than loosing some vice capacity (and the appearance issue), I don't think there is a problem with not recessing the flange.

>Pete, one thing I wanted to do on my bench was to recess a brass ring around the screw (on the visible side of the vice). I never found an off-the-shelf brass ring with just the right I.D. and O.D., so I gave up on that idea. If I had a lathe I would have made one.

However for you a larger diameter brass ring could be recessed into the front, covering that 1/8" thin area.

Don't know if this fits with the vision of your bench, but it's another idea.

Future things left to do are:

1. Shorten the unnecessary length of shoulder vice screw so I don't keep on hitting it with my hip.

2. Add drawers under the bench for increased storage.

3. ?

Interestingly, after a half-year of weather changes the bench width has not measureably changed, so my fretting about the tool tray ramps was perhaps unnecessary. However on the 3" thick dovetail at the shoulder vice corner, the tail is protruding enough to feel that wood expansion has occurred (perhaps less than 1/64th of an inch).
