"English" drawer construction question

>I am referring to the drawers with thin sides and a runner attached to the bottom edge to provide a larger bearing surface.
I asked about how to make these once before and got lots of helpful advice and what the assembly should look like. Now that I am into them I have an additional question concerning attaching the runner piece.
When in the process is the runner attached?
How is it attached-nail, screw, glue? Any reason not to glue?
How is the bottom of the runner brought even with the drawer side bottom edge?
I can imagine all sorts of possibilities. 1. Get the drawer dovetailed and fitted and then glue runner on a bit proud and plane it to even it with bottom of fitted drawer side. 2. attach it to drawer side before dovetailing and fitting. 3. Something in between these options.
No doubt there is a best approach that one discovers after doing a few, but I am on my first (of 7).
