I've got numerous handcrank grinders around, and am thinking of making one of those cardboard honers for one of them. I just need to eat a few more boxes of Froot Loops. ;~)

For those that haven't seen the video, he pronounces iron "AYE ron". We'll forgive him that -- the rest is good stuff.

Re: the toaster oven, I used the kitchen oven, but it took 30 min at 350 F followed by 30 min at 375 F. Probably would have made it at 350 F if I'd just waited longer. In the video, his irons went to what looked like full brown to me -- I think he said something about that being a little farther than typical. I went to what I'd call a light straw, following the recommendations on the Hock web site. I'm very happy with the quality of the irons I made.

For those thinking about making some plane irons, there are some pieces of O1 on clearance at flatground.com, an online steel supplier. I just picked up a 5" x 36" piece of 1/8 stock for $33 plus about $7 in shipping. That's more than a lifetime of molding plane irons. Buying wider stock gets you a much better price per unit steel, as someone here advised me previously.

Someone else here put me on to flatground.com; I'll post the link below. The stuff on special has links toward the bottom left of the page. Their regular prices are close to or slightly higher than MSC, but the stuff on clearance is priced at roughly half of MSC's retail prices. There's a real pot pourri of sizes, but you can find workable sizes in most of the sizes you might use for toolmaking -- 1/16" up to 1/4" and beyond. Drill rod stock too, mostly in odd but usable sizes. They also have some W1, A2, D2, M2, and S7 on clearance for you guys that like that other stuff. Quick shipping, adequate packing. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.
