Finish for a tool cabinet?

Mick Foley (Berkely, CA)

>Hey all -

I'm working my way though building an electron free wall mounted tool cabinet and I was wondering what a good finish would be. Looks are not important - the wood is poplar - but I am interested in durability and especially rust prevention. Does any one have any pros or cons here? There will be some tools resting directly on the wood, so I don't want anything that will encourage rust. At this point I am considering BLO, shellac or no finish at all, but I am open to just about anything that does not require too much skill to apply.

Thanks for any advice!

Mick

Not sure how much it matters, but no expert, me

I used...

I didn't bother to do much with the finish short of sanding between coats. After all it will get beat up a bit with use.

Someday my shop will look like that.

Nice shop.

I downloaded your pic and I'm sticking it to the wall of my shop until my shop looks like that.

>Well it's not looking too good right now or at least the other half is not. I'm having to remove lots of drywall in to prepare for some termite damage repair.
