>Why does the LV larger shoulder plane work so well on endgrain? I was planing some very dry highly figured tiger maple and the only plane that would do a really nice job was the larger shoulder plane. Is it the height of the plane helping you keep is square and the mass helps keep vibration down? Perhaps the bevel up and high angle your cutting at? What's your favourite plane for the job and have you tried a should plane?
