Secondly there should be a bracket that attaches to the back jaw arm that provides a horizontal surface to bolt to a bench. Search Ebay for blacksmith post or leg vise, and you'll find examples of complete ones.

>This is a blacksnith's vise and it is usually attached to a bench with the attached hardware and the post resting solidly on the floor. Usually the attatchment bracket is free to move up and down on the vise to allow the vise to fit a number of table heights, or you can block up the post.

These vises are designed to allow the smith to hammer in the jaws, and that is why they have the post. They come in various weights, as do anvils, so one has to respect the weight one has relative to the weight of hammers used.

I've made a variety of gizmos for it, like a carving jig and so forth. I need to find a serious way to mount it so I can use it out of doors. Maybe I will weld up a stand as shown.

I put a short heavy shelf against a wall near my shop doorway and bolted it to that.It's a handy vise. Nice find.---Jack

Hang on for a day or so and I'll post you pics of the one I have as it looks exactly like yours. right now my camera chip is awaiting to be downloaded onto a disk where my wife works, but the machine went down this morning and will take a day or three to get back on line.

Bit of a gloat here, my buddy found my post vise at a flea market for $20 and snagged it up for me. Rust Buddies the best! To sweeten the deal, the jaws are rusted shut, but have something that looks like a pitman arm between them. So, for $20 I get a long sought after post vice, AND a tool that needs rescuing all from a fellow Galoot. Life is good! :~)

>As others have said it is a blacksmith post vice and it is missing pieces , the large flat spring and the mount which holds the vice as well as the spring. Most times these mounts are made out of 3 or 4 pieces, 1 piece is the flat part that mounts on the bench and has a slot on the end, a "U" shapped piece that goes around the vice and spring, and then one or two wedges that holds the mount and the U shapped peice together tightly. The bottom of the vices leg can go into either a pipe driven into a dirt floor or into a wooden or metal piece with a hole drilled to take it.

These vises are very common even in the old tool Hell I live in , I think when I moved my friend Joe counted 47 of them that I had....have bought more then a couple since then I guess. With nice complete ones being so common and fairly cheap ,most [Very Small or Large ones are worth more] $20-$45....and I've bought them for $5 I really don't think it makes much sence to fool trying to hob a mount and spring together for somthing like this one.In the end you would probably be better off to just get a nice complete one. These vises are very tough so you don't see to many that are broken to get parts from either plus many are just a little bit different so that parts may not interchange. If you check the ebay you might find a mount for sale since maybe a smart ebay seller that doesn't want to ship a vise might break them up for parts....don't know.

If I just had to mount this vise I would drill two holes though the back leg and bolt it to a bench leg or post. Could make a spring and attach it with these two holes too...but again better off I think to just get a nice complete vise. They are a nice vise to use I have a couple mounted on my work bences as well as two out in my blacksmith shop, one tiny one and one huge one that probably weighs 200lbs, and really like them ......Todd
