garden benches
Carl Smith
>I just wanted to share my latest project. Made these from 2 inch oak and poplar sawmill slabs. Rounded the edges with drawknife, spokeshave and contour plane. Planed with handplanes, one of which was modified into a scrub plane, then scraped with a homemade scraper made from an old hand saw. Legs are from 2x2 oak shaped with drawknife, spokeshave and contour plane, using a shaving bench made from 2x4's salvaged from packing crates. The finish I used was spar varnish. I made 5 of them last year, one for each of my kids and my only married grandchild. They were supposed to be garden benches but turned out to be coffee tables instead. I'm experimenting with some mulberry for legs, that I split out of the trunk of a tree I cut down 2 years ago. Pretty yellow wood but I know it will turn brown with time.
