Krenov style wall cabinet

>Wanted to make one of these from the first time I saw one. Finally acquired enough experience to give it a try. One might have thought the case part would be easy, but the door is made first and the case fit to it to get a "perfect" fit. The door wasn't very easy either. Couldn't have done it without the tips I have learned at WC.

After making it I became more impressed with Krenov's engineering design abilities as well as the artistry of his work (and less impressed by the utility of the books in really describing how to execute some of these design features). Wood is rift cut ash, knob is BlackWood, and finish shellac.

>In his book the shelves are independant of the verticals. He has a detailed chapter on showcase cabinets in his book The Impractical cabinetmaker. Keep in mind that his work is often quite small.

Buy all five books while they are still available! Sure some of the instructions on tools are out of date, or just marginalized by all new ideas and stuff, but I still find him a wise guide.

>The process begins by making the glass facet rabbits in the bottom and top of the frame rails. These are a series of flat places for the glass to set against, as well as a flat spot for the glass divider to fit against. Hands down this was the hardest part of the cabinet. If this is sloppy then the door looks sloppy because this is the part of the cabinet most obvious. The glass divider is press fit into the frame(shooting board was essential here). It would not HAVE to be press fit, but if the dividers won't stay in place by themselves, life gets complicated fitting it all together. Then the nice lady at the glass shop who likes cabient makers cuts glass as you call out the sizes to cut, starting at each side and working to the middle. The last glass piece (middle pane) compensates for any errors that accumulate. This lady could nail sizes to 1/64". As a result of the tight fit the glass provided some support. Finally a tediously made curved piece is fitted around the dividers and nailed into place to hold the whole affair together.

That means you're supposed to tell me that only the first three books (which three is debatable, according to Amazon they are: "A Cabinetmaker's Notebook," "Joys of Cabinetmaking" (previously "Impractical Cabinetmaker"), and "Worker in Wood.") before recommending I buy all five (six with "Teacher"). :)

I've done fairly well by WC selling off excess magazines (LOML would argue they're all excess, but then she's got three bookcases full of Ceramics Monthly and pottery and photography books). You might consider putting it up on the auction board; I usually put a teaser on this forum and the main board when I do that, as not everyone visits it regularly.
