According to many sources (I've attached one, you can find others by googling 'float glass'), about all the commercial glass you will ever see is float glass. Process was invented by Sir Alastair Pilkington of the UK in the 1950s.
Just go to your local glass place and get a 3/8" thick piece, or 1/2" if you want it to be very, very deflection-free. Make sure they sand the edges so it won't cut you.

>Most of it is made across the river from where I live. Anything 1/4" of more will be flat enough, but 3/8 to 1/2 will be stiffer. I use 1/2", but then the workers there get it for me for free. I like 12 x 12 pieces and I fasten 3 strips(different grits) about 2 1/2" wide of abrasive paper to these pieces.
It is a poor substrate for slurries. To slurry sharpen you want the abrasive particles to embed in the substrate and the steel to move against them. Nothing embeds in glass. Use acrylic (plexiglas) instead.

>Bob, if you are the Chicago area as your name might suggest, you can get really nice inexpensive glass at Menards. Back in the shelving department they have Rubbermaid brand glass shelves that are 3/8" thick, flat, and with nice rounded edges. Various lengths, also, depending on how you want to lay out your abrasives.

>I walked into a local glass shop & they gave me a 24" x 36" x 3/8" piece of left-over scrap glass - and seamed the edges - for ten bucks. It's big enough to lap a #8 sole if you want to, or scary sharp blades at the edge.

He recommends using A2 steel for its wear resistance. I'm just wondering how a piece of glass manages to extrude a burr on A2 steel. I can hardly sharpen it on my Shapton stones.

>Bending a sharpened edge is affected by different steel properties than removing metal(sharpening). Metal deformation is largely dependent on hardness, so if the A2 and O1 are about the same hardness they will deform with the same forces. Whether they will break during this deformation will depend on their relative toughness. Abrasion resistance is not primarily affected by hardness (as measured by the deforming test of Rockwell hardness) but by the abrasion resistance of the carbides embedded in the iron matrix.
Not to beat a dead horse, but they all grind easily with diamonds.
