>It is interesting to note that there are budding woodworkers on my Information Technology team at work. One of them is deep into it and I have been supplying him with handplanes to encourage his manual skills. Now the letter programmer has expressed an interest in woodworking and I feel compelled to nurture it. As a result, he now has a tip top #4 coming his way on Monday. I hope great oaks grow from this planted acorn.

For crying out loud, leave those lad alone!! You're pushing them down a slope, of which they know not. Soon they'll be haunting flea markets every chance they get, spending way to much time on the computer, lusting over more and more tools, and becoming estranged from their families, just to name a few.

>I played with my Dad's Craftsman #4 for years. Never could get it to work. He knew nothing about it, being a tablesaw kind of a guy. Fast forward forty (yes, forty freakin' years!!!) when I went to a Highland Hardware tent sale. Thom Trail was over in the corner with a #5 making long and tender curls. Swish, swish it went. After years of wonder, I finally found out what the darn things would do. It sure would have helped me to start out with a really good working plane. I guess that experience is responsible for my desire to make sure that everyone who works wood knows what a handplane will do.
Just a wee gentle nudge. eh?

>Spiffs are sales incentives offered to salespeople by manufacturers, which are supposed to influence what the salespeople show you. For example, your store sells Nikon and Canon cameras. Canon offers your salespeople financial incentives for every Canon they sell. Guess which cameras the salesperson will show you most often and recommend most highly.
This tends to be highly fluid, with one vendor offering spiffs one month, another the next month.

PS I'm using these manufacturers as representative only. I don't know that they've ever offered spiffs or currently offer them.
