Viewing this series again, it occurs to me that there might be an ideal relationship between the laminate line and the back of the landing/start of the hollow. Is this so? Dave?

WHat I found the most interesting was seeing exactly where he taps the blade (top of the bevel), and how he checks the hollow (and flattens on a stone) to gauge his progress. Having seen this and read Dave's post I feel confident enough to give it a try.

Yes, the lines of his taps prompted me to ask about the relationship between the landing/hollow boundary and the lamination line. I think you should be confident, maybe with a cheaper blade to start, but none of this is rocket science, more intuition, feel, and a bit of applied intelligence.

I've not heard anything like what you're describing, just the more usual advice that somewhere between 1-3mm is a good stopping place. There's probably a practical limit beyond which you risk more cracking, or you have to resharpen the bevel so much that you start to lose some of the effect from tapping out. Probably a relationship in there somewhere. ;)

I have had several discussions about ura cutting and shape and spent time cutting ura with Yataiki, but nothing was ever discussed that related the ura to where the lamination line was on the bevel.
