Help placing a latch plate on a 1/2 mortice lock

>I am installing a 1/2 mortice lock on a couple of blanket chests. One installation is a retro fit and the other blanket chest is in mid stage. I can get the lock itself installed and looking pretty good, but I am a little stuck on how to line up the latch plate (I guess that is what you call the thingy that the hooks clamp onto, when you turn the key). I keep getting the plate misaligned. Is there a secret hidden here?

>but I put a dab of lipstick (one of my obsolete colors) on the male part, shut the lid and raised the lock to make where it hit. then centered the other part on the lip stick dab.

Have any double face tape?

>Put the tape on the inside of the plate. Set the plate on the lock, shim if necessary to touch the top. Lower the top and press.

>I don't know if this will help you, but the locks I buy have two little nibs on the underside of the lockplate. You put the lockplate on the installed lock, lock it in place, and then close the lid. The nibs mark the lid to locate the plate position.
